How to unlock the DVD regions on a laptop

Updated March 23, 2017

Laptop DVD players generally feature the capability to change supported DVD regions five times. This is to prevent video piracy; however, it also prevents people viewing DVDs bought in regions other than the one in which they bought their computers. This can be especially annoying to travellers wanting to view DVDs on their laptops while visiting other countries. A number of programs exist to unlock the DVD region on a laptop and enable DVDs from all regions to be viewed.

Navigate to the DVD Exploder website (see "Resources"). In the list of options at the top of the page click on the "Region Free PC Software" link, under the "Services" heading. Follow the step-by-step instructions to unlock your DVD player and enable DVDs from all regions to be played on your laptop. The service is extremely comprehensive, covering a wide variety of DVD players (even those lesser known brands) and providing a complete guide to unlocking your laptop DVD player. It does require registration.

Navigate to the DVD Unlocker website (see "Resources"). This website has been built in collaboration with industry insiders to provide unlock codes for DVD players and computer DVD devices. Scroll down the page to the "Check Out Our DVD Player List" and click on one of the Windows or Mac options at the top of the list. Scroll further down the page and click on the "Buy Now" PayPal sign. You will then be guided through the payment process. After you've paid US$ 9.95, the unlock company will provide a step-by-step guide to make your computer DVD player region-free.

Navigate to the All For MP3 website "DVD Ghost" page (see "Resources"). The DVD Ghost software available on this website removes all restrictions on your DVD software including CSS and region codes. It does not change any parameters or firmware of the DVD drive itself. It works well with all DVD drives, even those that have been locked. The set-up can be downloaded following registration and payment of US$ 39.95. Supported DVD software devices include PowerDVD, WinDVD, Direct DVD, Microsoft Media Player and Ultra DVD. Click on the "Tell me how to get the full version of DVD X Ghost!" link in the middle of the page to begin registration and follow the provided step-by-step instructions to unlock your laptop DVD drive.
