If you came up with a beading pattern and want to show others how to create it, you will need to make a bead diagram. A bead diagram is an illustration of the how the beads are arranged in the pattern and how the interconnecting strings weave through them. One way to make a nice, clean and useful bead diagram is by using a graphic editing program such as Paint Shop Pro 7.
- Skill level:
Open Paint Shop Pro 7 on your computer and go to "File" then "New." Size your new document to 8 inches by 10 inches so that you can print it out later. Set the background to white, and the "color depth" to 16 million colours.
Click on the bottom square of the colour palette and choose the colour you want to use to represent your beads. Select the "Preset Shape Tool" and pick a shape for the beads. If you are using cylindrical-shaped beads, choose the square to represent them.
Draw the first bead by clicking and holding the mouse and dragging it in a downward angle to the right. Go to "Edit" then "Copy" to copy the first bead and then "Edit," "Paste as New Selection" to duplicate the bead. Copy and paste the beads and arrange them in the positions that would appear in the finished pattern. Leave a small gap between each bead. When you are done arranging the beads, go to "Layers," "Merge" and then "Merge All."
Click on the top square of the colour palette and choose a bright colour that contrasts the colour of the beads. This is the colour you will use to represent the string. If there are two separate strings used in the making of the bead pattern, choose a different colour to represent the second string. For example, if you used red to represent the first string, you could use blue to represent the second string.
Choose the "Pen Tool" from the toolbox. Click on the small button, under the bottom square on the colour palette, that looks like a circle with a line through it. This will cancel out the "fill in" colour and you don't need this colour if you are only drawing a line. Go to the top of the program and choose "Line Segments" as the segment type, make sure the solid line is selected, and change the width to 6 pixels.
Draw the strings through the beads to show how they are woven through the beads. Click at your starting point at the first bead, hold down on the mouse button, drag the line through the bead, and let go to complete the line. Repeat this throughout the bead diagram.
Choose the "Text Tool" and click above each bead to type in a number to show the order in which the beads are added to the pattern. Make sure the font size is at least "72 pt" so it is visible when it is printed out on paper. Go to "File" then "Save" when you are done drawing your diagram.
