The two most common types of stars are six and five-sided stars. The five-sided star, or pentagram, denotes various signs and traditions represented in areas like mathematics and religion. Commonly known as the Star of David, the six-sided star or hexagram is a religious symbol associated with Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Both five and six-sided stars include straight connecting lines that appear, at first glance, as connected triangles.

Lay a sheet of paper on a flat surface and with the ruler on the paper, draw two lines connecting at an upward point, as in an upside-down "V."

Start from the downward point on the right and draw a line diagonally crossing the line on the left of the upside-down "V."

Connect to the diagonal point, draw a line straight across the first set of lines, and continue to the right.

Start from the last point in step 3, draw a line downward to the left, and connect it with the open point. Trace over the outer lines of the star and erase the inner lines to see the shape of the five-sided star.

Turn your upside-down triangle so it looks right side up and draw a straight line across the middle of the paper. Start at the open points and draw a diagonal line down each side and connect the lines at a point to form an upside-down triangle on top of the first triangle.
