Hawaiian-themed parties are always a hit because they combine the relaxed atmosphere of the beach with the celebratory tradition of the luau. While there are some decorations you should buy pre-made, like tiki torches, creating basic decorations for these parties from scratch adds a personal touch to your event. Use your imagination and you'll be thrilled to see how easy it is to throw a Hawaiian luau at home.

- Gossamer fabric
- Cardboard tubes
- Construction paper
- Flowers (either silk or real)
- Fishing line
- A long sewing needle
Buy at least one coconut or pineapple per guest to make fruit cups.
To make a coconut cup, saw the coconut open about an inch away from the top, where the pores are located.
Use a knife and spoon to remove the meat of the coconut and set it aside. Rinse the inside of the cups.
To make a pineapple cup, cut the top from the pineapple, then core the hard, inedible part of the fruit.
Scoop out the fibrous fruit, making sure not to come too close to the skin. Save the fruit for later use.
Pour out the extra juice, but do not rinse the cups. The cups will add additional flavour to drinks, if desired.
Purchase blue gossamer and crinkle it along the surface of your bars and tables to create an illusion of water. You can even drape the fabric over and make the tables look like waterfalls.
To accentuate the tables, create a centrepiece from tropical fruit or flowers or construct a palm tree by gluing together paper towel tubes with green construction paper cut into leaves.
Further adorn the tables by sprinkling seashells or flowers along the surface of the gossamer.
Purchase fresh or silk tropical flowers such as plumarias, orchids, hibiscus and gardenias. Fresh flowers are prettier and smell better, but silk is cheaper, easier to work with and lasts longer. You will need about 50 flowers per guest.
Take a 40-inch piece of fishing line and tie a large bow at one end to keep the flowers in place, leaving enough thread at the end to tie the lei when complete.
Thread the needle with this line and then go through the flowers back to front until the entire line is filled with flowers.
Tie your line together to create a full circle.
Make one lei per guest and plenty extra to drape along furniture and other decor to spice up the party atmosphere.
Tips and warnings
- The fruit from your cups can be served by itself or added to punch bowls for tasty decorations.
- Be careful when sawing the coconut, as it will tend to roll while you work.
- Pineapple cups are easy to make that coconut cups, however they must be prepared closer to the party to avoid spoilage. Also, it's easier to make a mistake cutting these softer fruits.
