The trackpad on most laptops can't completely make up for the lack of a mouse. If you don't have a spare mouse but have a Sixaxis or DualShock 3 PS3 controller, you can instead operate your computer's cursor using its joysticks. While still not ideal for general computer use, it gives you a good cursor alternative for your laptop, and lets you switch into gaming with the controller with no additional configuration.

  1. 1

Download the PS3 interface drivers. These drivers allow your PS3 controller to interact with your computer. Several websites offer download links to the driver software. Save the installation files to your hard drive.

  2. 2

Download joystick to mouse conversion software files to your computer. Several free tools for this purpose are available for free online, including the Joystick Mouse Tool and Joystick-To-Mouse.

  3. 3

Restart your laptop computer with driver signing disabled. Depending on which drivers you selected, you may need to complete this step before they will install successfully. Press "F8" during start-up and use the arrow keys to select "Disable driver signature enforcement." This allows you to install non-certified drivers until the system restarts again. Because non-certified drivers may contain unstable or malicious elements, only install PS3 controller drivers downloaded from a trusted source.

  4. 4

Open the downloaded files and install both the PS3 controller drivers and the joystick to mouse conversion software. Open both programs if necessary.

  5. 5

Connect a PS3 controller to the laptop using a USB cable and turn the controller on.

  6. 6

Configure the PS3 controller's sensitivity and other functions using the "Game Controllers" section of the Control Panel. Customize how the mouse cursor operates using the menu of the joystick to mouse conversion software.
