How to Make Hair Wax

Updated February 21, 2017

If you enjoy using hair products but dislike the negative effects such as dryness, discolouration and greasiness due to chemical ingredients, try making your own. One type of hair product that you can make is a hair pomade wax, which can be used to texturise long hair and create a chic, dishevelled look in short hair. A great natural hair wax can be created with hemp seed oil, which is often used as a moisturiser. It also helps boost hair elasticity and shine.

Mix the hemp seed oil, babassu oil, beeswax and shea butter in the glass bowl. They will not completely combine, because beeswax usually comes in solid form.

Pour about two inches of water into the pot.

Place the bowl into the pot of water and heat the water over the stove. Make sure none of the water gets into the bowl.

Stir the mixture occasionally. The heat from the water will melt the wax and make the ingredients easier to combine.

Remove the wax mixture from the heat and continue stirring until it has completely liquefied.

Add about three drops of clove oil, one drop of geranium oil, one drop of sandalwood oil, one drop of neroli oil and the ylang ylang oil. Stir until the mixture is completely combined.

Pour the mixture into the jar. Make sure the jar is shallow enough so that you will be able to scoop the wax from the bottom with your fingers.

Let the mixture cool before placing a cap onto the jar. The hair wax can be stored for up to three months.

Try adding a couple drops of lavender oil to add a natural fragrance to the hair wax.
