The Lenovo ThinkPad T61 uses an internal sound system called SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio to produce music and other sounds on the computer. This sound system requires device drivers in order to operate properly. Because of this, if you reinstall Windows on the ThinkPad T61 without using the included recovery disc, you may find that the computer no longer produces sound. You can resolve this issue by downloading and installing the SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio drivers from the Lenovo support website.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Browse to the download page for the ThinkPad T61 (see Resources). Click the blue "Audio" link near the top of the page.

  2. 2

Click the version number shown in blue next to the version of Windows--Windows Vista or Windows XP/2000--installed on your ThinkPad T61. This brings you to the download page for the audio driver corresponding with your version of Windows.

  3. 3

Click the blue link under "File Link" to download the file "7ka114ww.exe" if you are running Windows 2000 or XP or the file "7ka213ww.exe" if you are running Windows Vista. Navigate to the desktop and click "OK" or "Save" when your web browser asks for the desired download location.

  4. 4

Double-click the file "7ka114ww.exe" or "7ka213ww.exe" when the download is complete. Click "Next."

  5. 5

Read the Lenovo license agreement included with the audio driver software. Select the radio button indicating that you accept the terms, then click "Next" twice. This process extracts the contents of the archive to your computer. Click "Finish" when the extraction is complete.

  6. 6

Click the "Start" button, then click "Computer" or "My Computer." Browse to "C:," "Drivers," "Win," then "Audio."

  7. 7

Double-click the file "Setup.exe" to install the SoundMax drivers on your ThinkPad T61.

  8. 8

Click the "Finish" button when prompted to restart your computer and activate the new driver after the installation process is complete.
