Foobar2000 is a free audio player for the Windows platform. Foobar2000 plays MP3, FLAC, OGG, WMA and other audio files. FLAC is a lossless audio format; essentially compressed audio CD files. Unlike MP3s, FLAC files contain all the data from the original audio CD. This makes them significantly larger and not supported by as many devices. Foobar2000 creates MP3 files with the LAME MP3 encoder but doesn't include it by default. Convert FLAC files to MP3 files with Foobar2000 using the included "Converter" option.
- Skill level:
Right-click a FLAC file in the "Foobar2000" playlist pane.
Click "Convert" in the right-click menu and click "..." If you don't see the "Convert" menu option, download the Foobar2000 installer and reinstall the program (see Resources). The converter plugin is included with the default install, but can be deselected at install time.
Download the latest "LAME Bundle" from Rarewares (see Resources).
Double-click the downloaded "lame" .zip file on your computer.
Drag and drop the "lame_enc.dll" and "lame.exe" files from the .zip file into a folder on your computer.
Select MP3 output by clicking the "Output Format" box in the "Converter Setup" window that appears and clicking "MP3 (LAME)" in the list.
Adjust the output MP3 file's quality by clicking the "..." button to the right of "Output Format," dragging the "Quality" slider to the left or right and clicking "OK." Create a smaller file by dragging the slider to the left or a higher-quality but larger file by dragging the slider to the right.
Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the "Converter Setup" window.
Browse to the location of the "lame.exe" file on your computer in the "Please Locate lame.exe" window and double-click it. Foobar2000 converts the FLAC file to an MP3 file.
