The ancient Egyptians believed that if they wore the symbols of gods around their necks and close to their hearts they would be protected from harm and richly blessed. Today people wear Egyptian amulets for the beauty and intrigue of their designs. Though today's Egyptian amulets are made from a myriad of different materials, you can make an Egyptian amulet from a cardboard base following the design of the scarab, the symbol of rebirth that is believed to renew life and energy.

Things you need
- Picture of Egyptian scarab or other spiritual symbol (optional)
- White drawing paper
- Scissors or utility knife
- Gold foil
- Blunt knife
- 1 small jewellery connector ring
- 1 small nail
Draw an Egyptian scarab on a piece of white drawing paper the size that you want your amulet to be. The design must be big enough to support a hole for the jewellery ring near the top of the amulet. This will be your pattern.
Cut out your scarab pattern.
Lay the scarab pattern on the cardboard and trace around it. Cut out the cardboard amulet base.
Lay the scarab pattern on the gold foil and trace around it. Carefully cut out the gold foil scarab.
Etch design features with the blunt knife on the front of the gold foil scarab. They will be defining lines along the legs and on the back.
Glue the gold foil scarab to the cardboard scarab. Set aside until the glue is dry.
Measure the amount of rawhide that you want for your Egyptian amulet and cut it with the scissors.
Hammer the small nail into the top of the amulet to create a hole for the jewellery connector ring. Remove the nail.
Fit the jewellery connector ring into the hole you made in the previous step. Close it tightly with a pair of pliers.
String the rawhide through the jewellery connector ring and tie it in a knot at the ends.
