How to Read Skype Message History

Updated March 23, 2017

Skype is Voice-over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, software that allows users to communicate with landlines or other Skype users through voice and video chat. Skype also features an instant messenger that allows users to send messages to Skype contacts. Skype automatically keeps a history of instant messages sent and received for up to 30 days. You can view your message history through the main Skype interface.

Open Skype on your computer. Enter your user name and password to log in to the program.

Click on the "Conversations" tab on the left-hand side of the program screen. The tab appears in grey and is located to the right of the "Contacts" tab.

Click on the "Show History" button at the bottom of the "Conversations" menu. Click on the "All Events" drop-down button above your message history. Select the "Instant Messages" option.

Click on a conversation in the "Conversations" menu to view the conversation history in the main window of the Skype interface. Use the blue "Yesterday," "7 Days" and "30 Days" links to filter the length of history that appears. Note that Skype does not keep a history of your messages after 30 days.
