Decorating an attic conversion can be somewhat difficult. Most of the time, the room has slanted walls or ceilings that can be impossible to work with. Decorating an attic conversion may be more difficult because you may have less room to place furniture and wall decor. If you want to create a larger, more open looking room, you need to follow a few simple steps. By using a little interior decorating knowledge, you can get the best looking attic conversion possible.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Paint the room in light, neutral colours to make the room appear larger. Colours such as cream, beige, ivory, tan, pale yellow and light brown will create an open and airy feel to the room. To give the room more height, paint the slanted walls the same colour as the flat walls. Paint the ceiling an ivory or white colour. This way there is a clear definition of walls vs. ceiling. If the room has no flat ceiling, paint the entire room in an ivory or white colour.

  2. 2

Keep a light coloured carpet in the attic conversion. Like the paint, this will give the room an open and airy feel. It creates the look and feel of more space in the room.

  3. 3

Hang pictures only on flat wall surfaces. Hanging them on the slanted walls can quickly make the room look cluttered and unkempt. Consider hanging a few mirrors on the wall. The reflection makes the room look bigger, and the light reflected off the mirrors creates more light in the room. Artwork and prints are also acceptable, as long as they are hung on the flat walls.

  4. 4

Place the chairs, tables, sofa, bed or other large pieces of furniture against the flat walls, or in the middle of the room. There will not be enough space for furniture against slanted walls. Smaller tables, vases and figurines should be reserved for spaces against slanted walls.

  5. 5

Purchase vinyl lettering and place it on the slanted walls. Most vinyl lettering comes in quotes or special sayings. You can also paint murals on the slanted walls if the attic conversion is a child's room.
