Select your fabric for the wall hanging. It can be found in a fabric store or your closet if you have old clothing you no longer wear that has a usable pattern.

Cut out the desired shape and size of your fabric using your scissors. Leave an extra 3 to 4 inches on all sides for when you will staple it to your wooden frame.

Cut the wooden pieces to the appropriate lengths using your saw, outlining the frame for your wall hanging. The size and shape is up to you. A 12 by 12 inch square or a 12 by 24 inch rectangle will do the trick. However, you can always go much larger if you have a lot of free space on your wall.

Take the four freshly cut pieces of wood and form your shape of choice. Now drive a narrow wood nail through each corner of your shape, making sure you are contacting two pieces of wood with each nail. You may have to first drill a small hole prior to hammering in the nail to prevent the wood from cracking, depending on the size of the nail. (Larger nails with smaller pieces of wood will require a predrilled hole.)

Place the fabric you cut out on the floor or a table. Make sure the nonprint side is facing upward. Lay the wooden frame on top of it, making sure it is centred.

Pull the fabric tightly to the sides of the wooden frame and staple it to the wood using the staple gun. The fabric should be stapled on the back side of the wooden frame where staples will not be seen. Staple all around the edges until the fabric is secured and tight.

Tips and warnings

  • Keep in mind that you do not have to limit your wall hanging to just one. An arrangement of three shapes of similar or different sizes can really make a statement.
  • Use caution while using a hammer, drill, or staple gun.
