How to Connect a Compaq Presario 2500 to the Internet

Updated February 21, 2017

If you buy a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop computer, odds are you will use it to access the Internet at some point. Internet technology has progressed to the point that connecting a computer to an active Internet connection is virtually foolproof and only requires some basic know-how and a few simple steps. You can connect your Campaq Presario 2500 to the Internet through either a wired connection or a wireless network.

Contact an Internet service provider and have Internet service installed in your home. If you already have Internet service in your home, disregard this step.

Use an Ethernet cable to connect the Internet modem to your computer. Connect one end to the cable to the modem and the other end to the Presario's Ethernet port, typically located on either side of the keyboard.

Launch a Web browser and try to browse a website. Wired Internet connections that rely on Ethernet cables are essentially plug-and-play; you don't have to manually create a network and configure the settings. If your browser reports a connection error, contact your Internet service provider's technical support department for assistance.

Purchase a wireless router for your Compaq Presario 2500 from an electronics or computer store. After Internet service has been installed in your home, you can create a wireless network by connecting the wireless router to the modem that was installed by your Internet service provider.

Connect the modem to the router using an Ethernet cable. Plug one end of the cable into the modem's Ethernet port and plug the other into the port labelled "Internet," "WAN" or the yellow-coloured jack on the back of the router.

Connect a second Ethernet cable from one of the router's numbered Ethernet ports to the Ethernet port on your Compaq Presario 2500. Follow the manufacturer's instructions that came with the router to configure the router for your computer.

Enable the Compaq Presario's wireless card by pressing the radio button near the top of the keyboard. A light should illuminate indicating that the wireless card has been enabled.

Open a Web browser and attempt to browse a website. The Presario's wireless card should detect the wireless signal and automatically connect to it. Again, any connection error messages should be resolved by contacting your Internet service provider's technical support department.
