How to make cool ripped tee shirts
Grab a colourful t-shirt and distress it yourself for a hot 80s look. (looking for a shirt image by Ramona smiers from Fotolia.com)

The 80s are back again: Bright neon colours, bold geometric patterns and funky fashion trends have been making a triumphant return to the catwalk over the past few seasons. One of the hottest trends you'll see in stores this season is the "ripped tee." Distressed and ripped t-shirts look great with jeans, leggings and as a bathing suit cover-up. Luckily, you don't have to pay big bucks to get this look. With some scissors and a little imagination, you can create this fashion yourself.

Instructions

  1. 1

Lay the t-shirt on a flat surface. Measure 1 inch down from the collar of the t-shirt and mark it with the chalk. Cut a slit to the chalk line and then cut around the collar following the seam until you return to where you started.

  2. 2

Measure 1 inch from the cuff of each sleeve towards the shoulder. Mark the measurement with chalk and use the ruler to create a light line on each sleeve. Cut both of the sleeves on that line so they become cap sleeves.

  3. 3

Measure your choice of 2 or 3 inches below the armpit of the right sleeve on the seam of the shirt. Mark that place with a dot of chalk. Make a 1/2 inch line using the chalk and the ruler, slightly on the diagonal. From that line, measure 1 inch and make another dot. Make an inch line using the chalk and the ruler. Continue to measure an inch between each line and add 1/2 inch to each measurement until you've made 10 lines that are sequentially 1/2 inch, 1 inch, 1 1/2 inches, 2 inches, 2 1/2 inches, 3 inches, 3 1/2 inches, 4 inches, 4 1/2 inches and 5 inches long.

  4. 4

Cut a slit on each of the lines you made in the previous step.

  5. 5

Wash and dry the t-shirt according to the garment directions to remove the tailor's chalk. Wear and enjoy.
