Bamboo is a durable and attractive natural material that can be both functional and decorative. It is used for a variety of purposes, from the creation of sturdy cutting boards and wood floors to the embellishment of floral arrangements. In floral design, bamboo can be a highly complementary addition to Asian-inspired and tropical arrangements. Whether fresh, green and leafy or dried, hard and brown, bamboo lends a distinctive look to any floral arrangement in which it is placed. It comes in a variety of widths and lengths.

Instructions

    Make a Bamboo Pole Grid

  1. 1

Create a grid with bamboo poles. Lay several bamboo poles vertically and side by side on a flat surface. Arrange more bamboo poles horizontally over the vertical bamboo poles.

  2. 2

Connect the bamboo poles to one another by wrapping floral wire around each joint where a horizontal and a vertical pole overlap.

  3. 3

Lay the bamboo pole grid over a collection of water-filled bubble bowls (round vases) on a table. Place flowers in the bubble bowls through the openings in the bamboo pole grid for an eclectic, dynamic table centrepiece.

  4. 4

Use the bamboo pole grid as a background in a floral arrangement. Lift up the grid so it is perpendicular to the floor. Insert the bottom of the grid into a basket or other container filled with floral foam. When assembling a floral arrangement in the container, wind long, tall stems of flowers and greenery, such as asparagus fern, ivy and gerbera daisies, through the openings in the bamboo pole grid.

Use Bamboo Poles as Greenery and Accents

  1. 1

Add bamboo poles of varying heights and widths to floral arrangements in baskets, vases and other containers.

  2. 2

Place thin, green bamboo poles in vase arrangements where they can serve as interesting greenery. Select bamboo poles with leafy shoots for a lush, verdant look. Use bamboo poles that are slightly taller than the flowers in the arrangement to create dimension and interest.

  3. 3

Use thick, heavy bamboo poles as accents in tropical designs arranged in baskets and other containers filled with floral foam; the floral foam is a stable material that will hold large bamboo poles securely in place. Place greenery and flowers up against the bamboo poles to give the illusion that they are climbing and/or twisting around the poles.

Combine Bamboo Poles with Harmonious Flowers

  1. 1

Add bamboo poles to floral arrangements with an Asian-inspired or tropical look. Note that bamboo has been a feature of Asian art and design for centuries, and it traditionally grows in warm, moist locales.

  2. 2

Combine bamboo poles with spider chrysanthemums, peonies or Asiatic lilies for an Asian-themed floral arrangement.

  3. 3

Blend bamboo poles with proteas, Hawaiian ginger or orchids for a tropical-looking floral arrangement.

Tips and warnings

  • Since it can be difficult to cut and shorten bamboo poles with a traditional florist's knife, use gardening shears.
