A Swingline 270 is a heavy-duty electric stapler capable of stapling up to 70 sheets at one time. Staples are loaded 5,000 at one time through a compartment in the top of the stapler. Although this stapler is well-made to stand up to years of use, as with any other electrical tool, you might have occasional problems with it. They can be solved by following some simple instructions.

Won't Staple Unless the Top Is Opened

  1. 1

Open the top compartment of the stapler and remove the staples.

  2. 2

Spray light machine oil onto the mechanism that pushes the staples.

  3. 3

Push the mechanism back and forth a few times. If it moves without sticking, try loading the stapler with staples and stapling.

  4. 4

Observe whether it slides forward but does not return to its normal position. If this is the case, the spring may be worn and need replacing.

    Staple Jams

  1. 1

Remove the follow block at the back of the stapler by pushing it in, lifting it up and sliding it out of the stapler.

  2. 2

Take out any staples on the inner staple rail.

  3. 3

Push down on the front face plate tab, a plastic-covered tab located at the front of the stapler. The face plate should release so that you can open it at a 30-degree angle.

  4. 4

Check inside the face plate for broken or damaged staples, removing any that you see.

  5. 5

While the face plate is open, replace the follow block, observing whether it comes through the front of the stapler. If it does not, you probably still have some staples jammed inside, and you will need to remove the follow block again, look inside to locate the jammed staples, and slide them out the back of the stapler with needle-nosed pliers. Lock the front plate back into position.
