Wizard costumes for kids do not need to be complicated. A homemade robe, pointed hat and wand are enough to make any child easily identifiable as a mystical wizard. Crafting the costume at home allows you to customise the design and create a dark and sinister wizard or a kind and powerful wizard straight out of a fairy tale. Let kids help choose the fabrics and decorations to personalise their wizard costumes.
Cut the fleece in half to form two pieces measuring 3 feet by 5 feet. Stack one piece on top of the other, right sides together, and pin the layers of fabric together.
Place one of the kid's long sleeve shirts on top of the fleece with the collar of the shirt close to the edge of one of the 3-foot sides of the fabric. Arrange the sleeves a few inches away from the body of the shirt with the opening of the sleeves pointing down. Pin the shirt to the fleece.
Trace the shirt onto the fleece by drawing a line approximately 1 to 2 inches away from the edge of the shirt and sleeves with a fabric pen or marker. Do not trace the bottom edge of the shirt. Instead, extend the sides of your drawing down to the bottom edge of the fleece to create a long wizard's robe. You may also draw a flared shape at the bottom of each sleeve if desired.
Remove the shirt and cut both layers of fleece along the line.
Sew the two pieces of fleece together along the inside and outside of each sleeve, the sides of the robe and the shoulders using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Do not sew the collar of the robe, sleeve openings or the bottom of the robe shut or the child will not be able to wear the costume.
Turn the robe inside out. Carefully cut one side of the robe open from the bottom to the collar to create the front of the wizard robe. Trim the bottom of the robe so the child will not trip while walking.
Place a sheet of newspaper between two layers of gift wrap of the same size. Use a gift wrap that matches or compliments the fleece used for the wizard robe. Roll the layered paper up tight to form a cone. Secure the cone with clear packing tape and carefully roll up the open end of the comb two or three times to form a brim for the wizard hat.
Decorate the wizard robe with fabric paint and cut decorations from coloured contact paper to embellish the wizard hat. Paint a twig with spray paint or twist together several jumbo-size pipe cleaners to create a wand.
