A slot car racetrack made of wood is a project that both slot car and woodworking enthusiasts can partake in. The project can be as detailed, or as simple as you want. For a simple track, all that is needed is a large plywood board. For a more complex track, mountains, bridges, and crowds can be manufactured out of styrofoam and plastic models.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • One 4-foot by 8-foot plywood board
  • Pencil
  • Jigsaw
  • Router
  • Core box router bit
  • Sandpaper

  1. 1

Draw the shape of the track you want to build on a large plywood board, about 4 feet wide and 8 feet long. Multiple small boards can also be put together to make up a board of these dimensions. Use a pencil for the drawing.

  2. 2

Draw the location of the slots for the slot cars into the shape of the track.

  3. 3

Cut the track out of the plywood board using a powered jigsaw.

  4. 4

Cut the slots out of the plywood board using a router with a core box router bit that matches the size of the blade on the slot cars you’ll be using.

  5. 5

Sand the entire length of the plywood track until smooth and then finish the track with paint.
