How to hook up an external hard drive to a TV without a computer

Updated February 21, 2017

Sometimes you may want to display images, video files or music stored on an external hard drive. But instead of gathering a large group around a PC, it makes more sense to connect the external hard drive to a television. Unfortunately, the only way you can make this connection is if the television has a USB data port. Although most new televisions have this USB connection, older TVs do not.

Connect the external hard drive to an electrical socket, but do not power it on yet.

Plug the USB cable into the USB port on the external hard drive, then connect the opposite end of the cable to the USB port on the television.

Power on the hard drive and the television. Press the "Input" button on the TV's remote control and select "USB." The contents of the external hard drive appear on the screen. Select the video, picture and music files you want to play on the TV.

Things You'll Need

  • External hard drive
  • TV with USB port
  • USB data cable
