Make your own carpet cleaner with dry ingredients. The advantage to using dry ingredients is that you will not have to shampoo your carpet weekly. Dry carpet cleaners can remove and absorb heavy stains as well as dirt, dust and pollen. Homemade dry carpet cleaners also deodorise carpets and leave them smelling fresh.

Combine 2 cups of baking soda and 1/2 cup cornstarch. Sift together until blended well.

Crush four bay leaves with a mortar and pestle. Add 1 tablespoon of cloves. Mix the ingredients together with the baking soda and cornstarch.

Test an area on the carpet. Find an inconspicuous area, and apply the dry carpet cleaner to ensure that it will not change the colour of the fibres.

Sprinkle the dry carpet cleaner over the stained area. Allow it to sit overnight or for at least eight hours.

Vacuum the cleaning powder. Vacuum slowly to pick up all of the cleaning powder.
