Mimulus plants, also called Monkey plants, require little care to keep them growing well.Originating in North and South America, Mimulus plants are available in many combinations and shades of red, orange and yellow. If grown in a hanging basket, Mimulus trails down the sides of the pot in a profusion of flowers. Different types of Mimulus plants are available, and they flower from June to October. Mimulus plants can be grown in containers, beds, borders and window boxes.

Grow Mimulus plants in soil that remains moist. Mimulus plants prefer soil that retains water. Do not let the soil dry out. Also, Mimulus plants grow well in full sun to partially shaded areas.

Space annual Mimulus plants 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) apart. Perennial Mimulus plants need 30 to 36 cm (12 to 14 inches) of space.

Inspect the plants for aphids, and spray the plant with an insecticidal soap to remove the insects. Insecticidal soap is sold in most garden supply shops or online. Mix your own by combining 2 tbsp liquid dish soap with 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of water.

Feed the mimulus plants a liquid all-purpose fertiliser once a month. Read and follow label directions for amounts.

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage more flowering.
