If you have a friend who is a book lover, or if you are a book lover yourself, put your crochet skills to work to create a delicate crocheted bookmark. Worked in fine crochet thread, a crochet cross bookmark will hold your place in your book without damaging the pages. Add a personal touch to a gift for Confirmation or First Communion, or make several as thank you gifts for your children's Bible or Sunday school teachers. Even an inexperienced crocheter can complete a crocheted cross bookmark in an evening.

  4. 4

Repeat the last row 11 times for a total of 12 rows of single crochet. Do not chain 1 or turn at the end of the last row.

  5. 5

Make a second single crochet in the last single crochet to turn down the side of your work. Work 1 single crochet in the side of each of the next 8 rows. Chain 1, turn.

  6. 6

Work 1 single crochet in next 4 single crochet. Chain 1, turn.

  7. 7

Repeat the last row 5 times. Do not chain 1 or turn at the end of the last row. This completes one arm of the cross.

  8. 8

Make a second single crochet in the last single crochet to turn the corner. Single crochet in the side of each row back to the staff, then in each row to the end of the cross. Make 1 single crochet in the 4 stitches across the bottom of the cross, 2 single crochet in the last single crochet to turn down the side.

  9. 9

Make 1 single crochet in the side of the first 8 rows. Chain 1, turn.

  10. 10

Single crochet in the first 4 single crochet. Chain 1, turn.

  11. 11

Repeat the last row 5 times. Do not chain 1 and turn at the end of the last row. This completes the second arm of the cross.

  12. 12

Make a second single crochet in the last single crochet to turn the corner. Work 1 single crochet in the side of each row back to the staff, then work 1 single crochet in the side of each row to the end of the staff.

  13. 13

Chain 3, do not turn. Make 3 double crochet in between the second and third single crochet of the last row of the staff.

  14. 14

Chain 3, turn. Work 3 double crochets in the chain 3 space of the last row.

  15. 15

Repeat the last row until the strip is the desired length for your bookmark. You now have a cross with a long strip of lacy crochet extending from the end. One side of the cross bottom is attached to the strip. End with the crochet hook on the opposite side of the strip.

  16. 16

Chain 3. Single crochet in between the first and second double crochet on the next row. Chain 2. Single crochet in the next chain 3 space. Continue working in the side of the strip this way until you reach the bottom of the cross. Slip stitch into the corner single crochet to end. Break the thread and fasten off.

  17. 17

Weave in ends. If desired, attach gold, silver or coloured thread in one corner of the cross and work a single crochet edging around the entire bookmark.
