Your fireplace probably comes in handy on cold, winter nights. If you use it frequently, the time may come when the glass doors of your fireplace have become so stained and sooty that they need to be cleaned. Special cleaners are available that are designed to remove these carbon stains from glass. Cleaning your glass fireplace doors will likely take a little more effort than cleaning windows or other glass surfaces, but the payoff will come when you enjoy your newly cleaned doors.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Glass cleaner designed for carbon stains

  1. 1

Open the fireplace doors if they are hinged onto the fireplace. If your fireplace has bifold doors, you will need to remove them as per the manufacturer's directions.

  2. 2

Place the glass door on a soft surface such as a towel or blanket if your fireplace has bifold doors. This will protect the glass surface from scratching.

  3. 3

Place glass cleaner specifically designed for removing carbon stains on either a soft cloth or paper towel.

  4. 4

Rub the cloth or towel on the stained glass fireplace doors. Use a circular motion to move across and then down the glass in rows or columns until the entire surface has been scrubbed.

  5. 5

Let the cleaner sit on the glass for a few moments so it is able to dry.

  6. 6

Rub the cleaner off the glass with a new clean cloth or paper towel.

  7. 7

Repeat the cleaning process if carbon spots are still visible on the glass. On the second pass, it is not necessary to clean the entire surface, only the areas that are still discoloured.

  8. 8

Put the fireplace doors back on the fireplace.

Tips and warnings

  • You can use regular glass cleaners on glass fireplace doors, but because they are not designed for removing the carbon stains from a fireplace you may not have the desired results.
