Decide whether you want to contact your carrier by phone or go to an authorised service centre. If you're going to work over the phone, call from a land line or alternate cell phone with a separate account.

  2. 2

Contact the service provider and indicate that you want a new number. The representative may even try to accommodate special number requests.

  3. 3

Allow the representative to reprogram the SIM card to reflect the change. You may be directed to type a series of numbers into the phone.

  4. 4

Allow several hours for the number change take effect. According to ConsumerAffairs.com, "Cell phone numbers are supposed to be switched in less than three hours but that's just a guideline. It may take longer. " During that time, you can still complete outgoing calls.

Tips and warnings

  • Don't worry about updating your phone hardware. Once reprogrammed, the SIM card will automatically change your phone settings to reflect the new number. The phone number is carried with the card and isn't saved in the phone itself.
