We all like our computers to work flawlessly. If you're experiencing bugs, crashes and cryptic error messages, they might be caused by missing or corrupt drivers. Power management issues, such as hibernating or waking up your computer, can occur when your computer is missing its SMBus drivers. The System Management Bus, or SMBus, is a communication device that your computer uses to manage various parts of hardware, particularly the parts involved in power management. Fortunately, these drivers are available free, and installing them is a fairly straightforward process.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Determine that you actually need an SMBus controller installed on your computer. Usually you'll get error messages telling you about the SMBus controller, but just to make sure, check the Device Manager. Right-click on "My Computer," click "Manage" and then click "Device Manager." This will list all of the hardware that is installed on your computer. If you need to install the SMBus controller, it will be listed with a yellow exclamation mark on it to indicate that something is wrong.

  2. 2

Download the drivers. The SMBus is a technology created by Intel, so it provides drivers. Go to the Intel Chipset page (see References) and click on "Get the Utility." Select your operating system and then find the proper download in the list. Each one is categorised by the type of chipset for which it was written. If you don't know what chipset your computer uses, consult your manufacturer's documentation.

  3. 3

Run the program that you downloaded. It will give you a few prompts and you'll have to click "Next" a couple of times. Follow the instructions that these prompts give you. This process copies the information your computer needs for its SMBus to an area where your computer can find it. You will have to restart your computer, and then it will be configured with a properly working SMBus.

Tips and warnings

  • Installing drivers modifies your computer. Doing it wrong can make a computer unusable. Back up anything you don't want to risk losing.
