How to Replace Peeling PT Cruiser Chrome Rims

The chrome rims on your PT Cruiser are plated. This means that if the chrome starts to peel, you'll need to take it to a speciality shop that replates chrome rims. This process can become quite expensive, so you may wish to consider simply replacing the chrome rims. Replacement chrome rims can be purchased from some auto parts stores. However, a shop that specialises in aftermarket wheels will almost always have a wider selection for you to choose from.

  1. 1

Loosen the lug nuts by turning them a quarter turn counterclockwise with a tire wrench.

  2. 2

Life the PT Cruiser onto jack stands. Use the floor jack to lift up on the front of the Cruiser first, using the front jack point located behind the radiator. Then, place jack stands underneath the front pinch welds and lower the vehicle onto the stands. Next, lift up the rear of the PT Cruiser and place jack stands under the rear of the vehicle. Then, lower the vehicle onto the stands.

  3. 3

Finish removing the lug nuts and pull the old chrome rims off of the wheel hub.

  4. 4

Align the wheel stud bolt holes on the new rims with the wheel studs on the wheel hub assembly. Slide the new chrome rims onto the wheel hub.

  5. 5

Tighten the wheel lug nuts using a tire wrench in a criss-cross pattern until the rims sit flush against the wheel hub assembly.

  6. 6

Lower the vehicle to the ground and torque the lug nuts to 34kg-ft using a torque wrench.
