Acrylic resin is a versatile substance widely available at craft and hobby stores everywhere. It is usually sold in two parts consisting of a can of resin and a small bottle of catalyst. When mixed together, these substances will eventually harden into a solid resin and take the form of whatever mould the mixture is poured into. However, not all acrylic resins are the same. They may be clear or tinted, depending on the brand. The following instructions are for making a clear resin.

Purchase the clear acrylic. It usually comes in a rectangular metal can. Study the packaging thoroughly to be sure that it will be transparent when it hardens. There are some kits that are advertised as being transparent but which, upon curing, prove to have a yellowish tint.
Purchase your catalyst. Make sure it is the same brand as the resin.
Set up a work area. The area must have plenty of ventilation and it must be level. Spread three layers of newspaper over it. Make sure that the work area is not accessible by pets or children.
Pour a measure of liquid from one of the bottles into a plastic cup. The amount you will pour depends on how much acrylic you will need to fill your mould.
Pour your catalyst into a graduated plastic cup. The amount will depend on how much acrylic you are using. There is often a chart printed on the back of the can.
Pour the catalyst into the cup of resin. Stir it with a Popsicle stick for a full minute.
Spray or paint your mould with mould release. Mold release comes in a small bottle found in the same aisle as the resin.
Pour the liquid mixture into your mould.
Wait for the mixture to cure. The amount of time it takes depends on the brand of acrylic and may range from a few minutes to a few hours.
When the acrylic has hardened, pop it out of the mould. You now have a replica made of transparent acrylic.
Tips and warnings
- Bubbles may form in your acrylic when you pour it into your mould. To avoid this, warm the mould slightly. Do not overheat.
