Hi8 video is recorded onto a cassette tape and so is not compatible with being played on a computer or a mobile device like an iPod. Converting the Hi8 video to a digital video file can be done on an iMac by using a video-to-digital converter that is designed to work with the Macintosh OS X operating system. The video-to-digital converter attaches externally though cables and so neither the Hi8 camcorder or the iMac is physically changed. Converting a Hi8 video to a digital video file will let the video be viewed on the iMac and other devices.

  2. 2

Attach the left and right audio cables from the Hi8 A/V cable to the video-to-digital converter. Attach the USB plug of the video-to-digital converter to a USB port on the iMac.

  3. 3

Insert the video-to-converter installation disc into the iMac's disc slot. Double-click on the icon of the installation disc when it appears on the iMac's desktop to open a window. Double-click on the installation program inside of the window and follow the prompts to install the video-to-conversion program. Drag the icon of the installation disc to the Trash to eject the installation disc. Put the disc away.

  4. 4

Run the video-to-digital converter program. Turn on the Hi8 camcorder. Follow the prompts of the video-to-digital converter program to select "Video" and "Stereo audio" from the menus. Press "Continue" to bring up the video screen that will display the video coming from the Hi8 camcorder once it starts to play the Hi8 video cassette.

  5. 5

Press the "Play" button on the Hi8 camcorder. Press the "Record" button on the control panel below the video-to-digital program's video window. Press the "Stop" button when the Hi8 video cassette has finished playing.

  6. 6

Disconnect the video-to-digital converter USB plug from the iMac's USB port. Disconnect the video-to-digital converter from the Hi8 A/V cable. Turn off the Hi8 camcorder and put it away.

  7. 7

Press the "Save as" button on the video-to-digital converter program's control panel. Name the digital video you are about to make from the Hi8 video in the "Name" column of the window that appears. Press the "Save" button to save the digital video on the iMac's hard drive that was converted from the Hi8 video.

Tips and warnings

  • Be sure you have plenty of hard drive space for saving the digital video file that will be made from the Hi8 video.
  • Do not use a USB hub on the iMac to connect to the video-to-digital converter.
