Regular windshield wiper replacement is necessary to maintain the best visibility during inclement weather. You can tell your wipers need replacing when the blades streak your windshield or wipe unevenly. On a Lexus LS400 the wiper blades on the driver's side and passenger side are actually slightly different in size. However, the process to remove and install both wipers remains the same.
- Skill level:
Things you need
- Cloth rag
- Flathead screwdriver
- New windshield wiper blades
Lay cloth rags under the windshield wipers before you begin working. The rags will protect the glass from potential scratching or cracking if any of the wipers accidentally snap back during removal or installation.
Pull the windshield wiper arm up from the windshield and swing the wiper blade perpendicular to the arm, which will allow access to the release tab where the blade and arm meet. Look closely at the area where blade fits into the hook of the wiper arm and find the release tab.
Press down on the release tab to loosen the wiper blade and slide it off the wiper arm. If you have difficulties with the release tab, use a flathead screwdriver to apply light pressure and then shove the blade toward the base of the arm.
Install the new windshield wiper by aligning the wiper blade with the empty hook slot in the wiper arm. Insert the blade pivot into the hook slot. Push the pivot toward the slot until it clicks. This means that the blade has been successfully locked into place.
Straighten out the wiper blade so it is extends from the arm and slowly return the arm to its original sitting position against the windshield. Remove the cloth rags when you are finished.
