How to mount a headboard

A headboard is a functional or decor element set at the head of the bed. The headboard can be made of wood, brass, iron or wicker, and can be covered with padding and fabric. The standard headboard is 35 inches tall, from the floor to the top of the headboard. However, custom-design headboards can be much higher, and start from the mattress instead of the floor. A store-bought or homemade headboard can be attached to the wall or to the bed frame if the headboard reaches the floor.

Instructions

    Wall Mount

  1. 1

Make a horizontal line using the level on the wall at the head of the bed. The line should be 1 inch down from the top of where you want the headboard to hang, and 1 inch in from each side. Mark the centre point of the line with a vertical mark.

  2. 2

Use a stud finder to locate the studs along this line. Place a dot or vertical line across your horizontal line to show where the studs are.

  3. 3

Screw one half of the bracket set into the two outermost studs using flush mount screws on the stud. Add an additional bracket to the centre stud if needed. Use two brackets for lightweight headboards or twin, double or queen-size beds. For king-size beds or very heavy headboards, use three brackets. You can use either flush mounting brackets or adjustable flush mounting brackets. The adjustable brackets are a little bit easier to use.

  4. 4

Draw a horizontal line on the back of the headboard 1 inch down from the top, and mark the centre point.

  5. 5

Measure the distance of each wall-mounted bracket from the centre line. Use those measurements to mark the back of the headboard. Install the second part of the bracket set onto the headboard at the marked locations.

  6. 6

Slide the headboard down onto the brackets on the wall to mount it.

    Bed Frame Mount

  1. 1

Position the headboard between the bed and the wall, centring the headboard across the width of the bed.

  2. 2

Locate the holes or slots on the frame at the head of the bed.

  3. 3

Mark the location of the bed frame holes onto the headboard if the headboard does not already have slots for mounting. Drill a hole completely through the headboard using a drill bit slightly larger than the size of the bolt.

  4. 4

Push the bolt through the backside of the headboard and through the hole on the bed frame. Add a washer and then use the wing nut to secure it snugly. NOTE: If the bolt head exceeds the size of the opening on the headboard, use an additional washer on the head of the bolt.

Tips and warnings

  • When mounting a headboard to the bed frame, it's best to have the box springs and mattress off the frame.
