For those who are adept at sewing and want to make a unique design, sewing your own cycling jersey can be a fun, rewarding activity. Making a cycling jersey at home will probably only save you a few dollars off of a professionally made one, so the freedom of wearing your original design is the real reward.

  1. 1

Create a mockup of your intended design; make colour drawings of exactly what you want your cycling jersey to look like.

  2. 2

Purchase a cycling jersey pattern and 1 yard of your desired material; wicking Lycra is the most comfortable and stretchable. Several web sites offer patterns and fabric.

  3. 3

Gather all supplies at the sewing machine. Double-check instructions included with patterns to ensure you have all materials needed.

  1. 1

Following the instructions included with the pattern cut the fabric according to the specifications. If you would like different colours, use a separate swath of fabric and cut one of the pieces from this.

  2. 2

Sew the pieces together, paying close attention to the armholes to ensure a tight fit. Add any patches or decoration you wish at this point.

  3. 3

Double-check the jersey for any gaps or puckering in the seams and repair them. Try on the new jersey to ensure proper fit.

Tips and warnings

  • Use an extra strong thread to keep the seams securely fastened
  • Although sewing skills are not necessary, knowing a bit about sewing clothes from patterns can help you make a snugly fitting jersey
