How to Install Curtains Over Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are frequently hung over a large window or a patio door to add privacy. They are an especially suitable choice for a patio door because you can open them easily, allowing the patio door to be used. Add additional decor to a window or door by adding curtains over the vertical blinds. Not only will curtains add colour, but they will also add additional insulation from heat in the summer and cold in the winter.

Measure the window dimensions and add approximately three inches to both the height and width measurements.

Purchase curtains that will cover the dimensions measured in step 1. Purchase a curtain rod that is two inches longer than the adjusted width dimension from step 1.

Install the curtain rod above the window using the mounting hardware included with the curtain rod. Climb the ladder, if necessary, and draw small pencil marks approximately four inches above the window and two inches outside the top left and right corners. Draw a mark at the centre point of the window four inches above the window also if the window is wide enough that additional support is necessary at the centre point. This would be necessary for a patio door window or large picture window. Install the mounting hardware at these marked points using the drill.

Lay out the curtains and clip the rings on the top edge of the curtain. If there are pleats on the curtains, simply clip a ring to the curtain onto the fabric behind each pleat. If there are no pleats, measure along the top of the curtain and clip the rings at even intervals. Recommended clipping ring intervals are every two to four inches.

Slide the rings onto the curtain rod and install the curtain rod onto the mounting hardware above the window. Adjust the curtains evenly along the curtain rod to finish.
