Windsocks are tubes through which wind blows and indicates wind direction. The wind direction is determined by the direction the windsock blows in---the wind blows from the opposite direction the windsock points. As the wind blows, it fills the windsock with air, lifting it up and causing it to blow outward in the direction the wind is blowing. Windsocks are sold in stores. However, they are popular do-it-yourself crafts as well.
Measure and draw the form of a fish on Kraft paper, making it 30 inches long. Draw the body 12 inches wide in the centre of the body and taper the width off to 7 inches at the head and mouth of the fish.
Cut the drawn fish from the Kraft paper, and then use the cut-out as a stencil to trace an exact replica onto another piece of Kraft paper. Cut out the newly drawn form as well.
Use markers to colour and design your fish. Draw scales, stripes, dots or anything else you wish.
Glue the two fish forms together, creating a ½ inch seam around the fish by overlapping one form onto the other by ½ inch. Do not glue the mouth of the fish together.
Fold the 12 inch by ½ inch strip of oak tag into a 7-inch-diameter circle, and glue it in place. Let the oak tag circle dry completely.
Place the circle approximately 1 inch within the fish's mouth. Glue the circle inside the fish's mouth, and fold the extra inch of fabric down to cover the circle, effectively hiding it. The circle should make the fish's mouth wide and open.
Make three pen or pencil marks around the mouth of the fish, spaced 2 ... inches apart, and use a hole puncher to punch a hole in the measured marks.
Cut a 12-inch length of kite string and a 7-inch length of kite string. Tie the ends of the 12-inch string to two of the punched holes; it does not matter which two. Tie one end of the 7-inch string to the remaining hole, and then tie the other end of the 7-inch string to the centre of the 12-inch string.
Decorate your fish windsock with glitter pens to make it sparkle in the sunlight.
Do not use flimsy material, such as thin tissue paper, to create your windsock; a strong wind may rip or tear it.
