How to make a dome with paper

Updated July 20, 2017

Papier mache is an easy process for making a 3-D shape out of paper. Use a balloon as the mould onto which you shape the paper mache. Covering half of a balloon will yield a dome made out of paper.

Make papier mache paste by mixing equal parts flour and water with a spoon in a shallow container.

Blow up a balloon and tie the end to secure.

Tear newspaper into thin strips to use in the papier mache.

Dip a strip of newspaper into the paste, covering both sides and removing excess paste by scraping the strip against the side of the container.

Lay strips of the paste-covered newspaper onto the balloon. Repeat until half of the balloon is covered in several layers of papier mache. Let dry.

Cut away the uncovered side of the balloon, and remove the balloon lining from the inside of the papier mache side. You will have a dome shape remaining.
