Brick fence posts create a solid, stately air on your property. You can easily build a fence post from brick with the proper tools and a few simple instructions. Take the dimensions of your fence posts to the brick supplier. He'll advise you on how many bricks you'll need to complete the project. You can buy the remaining supplies at a home improvement store.

Instructions

  1. 1

Measure the length and width of your fence post and mark the outline with string and wooden stakes.

  2. 2

Excavate the ground where you will lay the bricks by removing any grass and skimming the top with your shovel until it is level. You'll be laying two bricks, side by side, around the perimeter to create the walls of your fence post.

  3. 3

Create a 50/50 blend of dry concrete mix and coarse sand, enough to spread a 1/2-inch layer on the excavated ground where you will lay the brick for your fence post. Spread the sand blend evenly.

  4. 4

Mix the concrete with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Spread a thin layer on top of the sand blend, large enough to place two bricks along the length or width of your fence post. Level the concrete and scrape the top with the serrated edge of your trowel.

  5. 5

Place one brick into the concrete mix where the outside corner of your fence post will be. Layer some of the concrete mix on the inside edge of the brick to create adhesive for the second brick. Place the second brick next to the first brick, edge to edge. Press both bricks firmly into the concrete.

  6. 6

Create the corner of your fence post by placing two more bricks, side by side, at a 90-degree angle to the first set. Continue adding a two-brick base around the perimeter of your fence post, smoothing a layer of concrete mix between each of the bricks.

  7. 7

Stack your next two bricks in the centre of the mortar seam of the first two. Build your brick fence post up to the desired height by working your way around the outside perimeter, Building your fence post walls simultaneously offers more stability to the structure as you work than if you built the sides individually.

Tips and warnings

  • Randomly press colourful glass beads or small stones into the mortar between the bricks before it dries to add a unique touch to your brick fence post.
  • Wear gloves when working with bricks and concrete.
