Unfortunately, you can't play your guitar all day long. You need a place to keep it when you're doing other, less fulfilling things. Yes, you could always stow your guitar in your case or gig bag. If you do that, however, you won't be able to show off your guitar or pick it up at the slightest whim. That's where a guitar stand comes in. If you leave your guitar on a stand, you can display your guitar and ensure it's ready whenever you need it.

  1. 1

Gather your materials. The basic shape of the guitar stand is easy to make, but you have to choose between hard or soft wood. Soft wood is a little easier to work with, but hard wood often looks much better. You should have four pieces of wood that are at least 1/2-inch thick and 2 feet long. Pick up four 6-inch lengths of dowel rod, too.

  2. 2

Measure three pieces of wood to that 2-foot length and cut them. These will serve as the base and tripod for your guitar stand. Screw two of the base pieces into a small piece of wood at a 30-degree angle. Then screw the third leg of the tripod at a wide angle. The wider the angle, the more stable your guitar stand will be. Be sure to wiggle the stand a little to make sure that it's stable enough.

  3. 3

Drill starter holes into the bottom front of the legs of your guitar stand. Test the dowels in the hole to make sure they will fit. The dowels will hold the bottom of your guitar on the stand. Screw one of the remaining dowels on each side of the top of your stand. These will prevent your guitar from slipping sideways.

  4. 4

Decorate your guitar stand. This is all up to you. You can stain the wood to match the decor of your music room or you can paint the stand in wild colours. Either way, you should sand all of the surfaces of your sand with fine-grain paper for a smarter look and to help reduce the chance you'll get bitten by splinters.

  5. 5

Wrap the felt around the bottom and top dowels of your guitar stand, and glue a little bit to the top as well. This will prevent the stand from scratching your guitar.
