How to get rid of wrinkles above the lip

Updated April 17, 2017

Wrinkles, an inevitable part of the ageing process, happen as skin loses its elasticity. While they can occur anywhere on the body, people most commonly seek to get rid of facial wrinkles. The skin around the mouth is particularly prone to wrinkles, due to the frequent movement that occurs at that location. Thankfully, there are many methods you can employ to get rid of wrinkles above your lip.

Wear sunscreen daily. Choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, as well as one with a high SPF level. The sun's damaging rays are major contributors to wrinkles so it's imperative to keep your skin protected.

Relax your mouth. People commonly carry tension in their mouths and jaws. If you repeatedly hold particular expressions for prolonged periods of time, you are more likely to wrinkle. Consciously try to relax your mouth throughout the day. As you become more aware of the area, you'll be less likely to hold extraneous tension there.

Apply an anti-wrinkle cream above your lip. Choose a cream that contains hydroxy acids. These naturally occurring acids help to remove the skin's top layers, thereby revealing younger-looking skin.

Visit a dermatologist. You can get a prescription for Retin-A creams. Retin-A greatly encourages skin cell regeneration, meaning new skin cells are produced more quickly to replace your older, wrinkled skin cells. With regular use, Retin-A can reduce the wrinkles above your lip.

Get chemical peels. Chemicals are applied to the skin above your lip which essentially burn away the top layers of skin. Once your skin heals, the area will appear younger, smoother and less wrinkled. Chemical peels are available in a variety of different strengths, ranging from light to deep. Talk to your dermatologist about what strength is right for your upper lip wrinkles.

Try laser therapy treatments. Laser light is applied to the skin above your lip. The laser burns away the surface layers of skin and stimulates collagen production. With a series of treatments, your upper lip wrinkles can be completely removed. Your skin will also appear more even in tone.

Sleep. Proper rest is necessary for healthy skin. If you don't get adequate sleep, you are prone to premature wrinkling. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep nightly.

Moisturise. Keep the skin above your lip properly hydrated at all times. Dry skin is more likely to wrinkle. If you regularly moisturise, you can keep more elasticity in your skin, preventing future wrinkles and making existing wrinkles less noticeable.

Eat a well-balanced diet. Proper nutrition is essential for healthy, younger-looking skin.

Keep your skin out of the sun completely after laser treatments and chemical peels. Your skin will be incredibly raw and irritated.
