How to make a Homemade Hair Mask

Hair masks work well to repair and improve the look of dry, damaged hair. These masks are available for purchase at most beauty supply stores and professional hair salons. If you don't want to spend much money, but still wish to improve your hair, homemade hair masks are another option. Homemade hair masks are simple and inexpensive to prepare.

Things you need

  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp wheat germ oil
  • 1 tbsp plain yoghurt
  • Vitamin E capsule
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/4 cantaloupe
  • 1/4 avocado
  • Blender
  • Mixing bowl
  • Fork
  • Shampoo
  • Wide-tooth comb

Instructions

    Strawberry Mask

  1. 1

    Mash 1 cup ripe strawberries in a small mixing bowl with a fork.

    Add one egg yolk and 2 tbsp olive oil to the mashed strawberries and mix the ingredients together with a fork.

    Apply mask to the entire head of hair from root to tip. Make sure to fully saturate the hair ends with the mixture.

    Allow the mask to set in the hair for 20 minutes.

    Rinse out the hair mask with warm water. Shampoo the hair to remove remaining traces of the mask.

    Honey and Lemon Mask

    Mix 2 tbsp honey with 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice.

    Stir the mixture until the honey dissolves into the lemon juice.

    Apply mask to the entire head of hair from root to tip. Make sure to fully saturate the hair ends with the mixture.

    Comb out any tangles from the mask with a wide-tooth comb.

    Allow the mask to set in the hair for 10 minutes.

    Rinse out the hair mask with warm water. Shampoo the hair to remove remaining traces of the mask.

    Fruit Smoothie Mask

    Combine 1 tbsp wheat germ oil and 1 tbsp plain yoghurt in a small mixing bowl. Break open a vitamin E capsule and squeeze the oil into the mixture. Stir all the ingredients together.

    Combine 1/2 banana, 1/4 cantaloupe and 1/4 avocado in a blender. Blend the fruit on high.

    Add the oil and yoghurt mixture to the blender. Blend the ingredients on high until the mixture is thick and smooth.

    Apply the mask to the entire head of hair from root to tip. Make sure to fully saturate the hair ends with the mixture.

    Allow the mask to set in the hair for 10 minutes.

    Rinse out the hair mask with warm water. Shampoo the hair to remove remaining traces of the mask.

Tips and warnings

  • Add vitamin E to any of the masks to moisturise hair.
  • Brush hair out thoroughly before applying any of the masks.
