You may find a time when you need to replace your windshield-washer tubing in your Ford Focus. In circulation since 1999, the Focus is a compact car that hasn't changed its wiper tubing style over its short lifespan. By properly installing a few items, you can be on your way to wiping away any precipitation or dirt that comes across your view.
Determine if your windshield-washer tubing is clogged. Occasionally the little holes on the ball of the sprayer become clogged from washer fluid build-up or hard water. You don't need to replace the tubing if this is the case. Simply use a pin or sewing needle, poke a hole and eliminate any debris.
Purchase windshield-washer tubing or kits from a car parts store. The tubing might also be referred to as vacuum tubing. There isn't a specific type you need to purchase. Ask at the store if you need assistance.
Locate the windshield-washer fluid reservoir next to the battery. It's near the right edge of the engine compartment.
Remove the old tubing. Be careful around the vacuum connectors. Avoid breaking or disfiguring the connectors if you plan to reuse them.
Hold up the old windshield-washer tubing if you plan to replace the entire section. Place the new tubing next to the old, using the old as a guide to the length your car needs. Use a hose cutter to cut enough of the new tubing to fit your Ford Focus.
Place the new tubing into your Focus. Use the old connectors, or insert the new ones, and ensure the tubing doesn't interfere with any other engine parts. When closing the hood, make sure the tubing doesn't get bent.
If the crack in your tubing is small, try patching it instead of replacing the entire tube. Cut away the torn tubing, and use a connector attachment to secure the new piece to the old, intact piece. If you're driving a 2008 or 2009 Focus, the reservoir is located on the other side of the compartment, to the left of the engine coolant reservoir.
In 2001, the NHTSA issued a recall of the 2000 Ford Focus when it found the windshield-washer switches could malfunction and overheat. If you own this car, make sure it has been serviced for this recall before you change the tubing.
