How to make a "Follow" button on Blogger

Previously, Google’s “Friend Connect” gadget was the best option for a “Follow” button on Blogger, but it was cancelled in late 2011 in favour of integration with their social media service. If you’re looking to make it easy for people to follow your blog, using the “Google+ Followers” is the best method. This does mean that those who want to follow your blog will have to create a Google+ account, however, so it might discourage some people from following you. Alternatively, you can use the “Follow by Email” widget so your readers can follow you without a Google+ account.

Skill level:

    Google+ Followers

  1. 1

Navigate to your Blogger Dashboard and click on the name of the blog you wish to add the button to. This will take you to the “Overview” page for that blog.

  2. 2

Click “Layout” from the menu on the left hand side of the screen. It’s the third option from the bottom of the menu. You’ll be taken to a basic representation of your blog’s layout.

  3. 3

Find a blank gadget space (shown with a dotted line) and click on the “Add a Gadget” link, which is displayed in blue. This brings up a pop-up window listing the available widgets.

  4. 4

Click on the “Google+ Followers” option in the “Basics” tab. You should start on the “Basics” tab, but if not you can click the option in the top left. This will take you to the configuration screen.

  5. 5

Choose a size for your gadget by selecting the radio button beside “Automatic” or “Manually specify.” If you decide to specify manually, enter your desired “px” value in the “Width” and “Height” columns. It’s automatically set to 196 for width and 300 for height, but you can adjust the values if you want it bigger or smaller.

  6. 6

Select either light text on a dark background or dark text on a light background beside “Colour Theme.” You can always come back and edit it later if you don’t like how it looks. Enter a title for your gadget in the field underneath the preview if you like, and click “Save.”

  7. 7

Click “Preview” if you want to see how it looks on your blog. You can choose “Edit” to the bottom left of the widget on the “Layout” page if you want to make changes. Click “Save arrangement” to confirm your changes.

    Follow by Email

  1. 1

Follow steps one to three above to bring up the “Add a Gadget” window. Scroll down (in the “Basic” tab) and click on the “Follow by Email” option.

  2. 2

Edit the title of the gadget if you like, and then click “Save” to place the widget in the location you selected. It will give you readers a field to write their email addresses and a “Submit” button.

  3. 3

Check it by clicking “Preview” and choose “Save arrangement” when you’re done.
