Design

Design and build a water fountain for your yard or garden out of terracotta pots for a natural addition to your landscape. You could choose to build a topiary style water fountain for your patio by stacking three successively smaller pots and filling in with river rock. Add bamboo stalks to a single, large terracotta pot to create a Zen style water fountain or make a simple fountain for the edge of your pond by placing a pot on its side and letting the water flow through it. The natural texture and colour of terracotta pots fits in well with any garden design.

Materials

To build a three-tiered water fountain you will need three terracotta pots: small, medium and large. A water fountain pump, plumber's putty, river rock and two terracotta tiles are the only other materials you will need for this project. You can substitute coloured stones in place of the river rock, or stack only two pots for a smaller scale water fountain. The construction technique is the same no matter how many pots you stack.

Construction

Begin by placing the fountain pump into the largest terracotta pot. Run the electrical cord out of the drainage hole, and then seal the opening with plumber's putty so the water for the fountain will stay in the pot. Attach the plastic tubing included with the pump. Pile river rock or stones around the pump, leaving the mechanism to make the spray adjustments accessible. Keep the plastic tubing in the centre as you stack rocks around it. Build a flat rock base and place the terracotta tile on top. Run the plastic tubing over the tile and through the drainage hole of the medium-sized terracotta pot. Seal the opening with putty and then stack rocks in the pot. Build the rocks upwards, forming another flat base to rest the remaining terracotta tile. Run the tubing through the drainage hole of the smallest terracotta pot, seal the opening and place the pot on the tile. Fill the top pot with river rocks, keeping the plastic tubing in the centre. Stack the rocks until you can no longer see the tubing. Fill the pots with water before you turn on the fountain. Make any nozzle adjustments, and then cover the fountain pump completely with rock.
