Windows has hundreds of system error codes. Sometimes when you are unpacking zipped or archived files on your computer, you may receive the message "An error occurred while unzipping. One or more files were not successfully unzipped. The error code is 110." Understand the meaning of this error and how to resolve it.

Error Code 110 refers to a file input/output condition that is technically known as "ERROR_OPEN_FAILED." This error occurs when your computer cannot open the specified device or file. When unpacking a ZIP archive, this means the file you're trying to unzip cannot be opened on your computer.

Error 110 can have three possible causes. The first is that your operating system is not compatible with the type of file you are trying to open. For example, if you are using an older version of Windows, you may not be able to unzip a file created on a newer version. The second possibility is that the zip file itself is corrupt, which can happen when the archive is initially created. Third, Error 110 may occur if the zip file is infected with a virus or spyware.

Upgrade to a newer version of Windows if you determine that the zip file error was created using a newer Windows system. In the second instance, a corrupt zip file cannot be repaired; you will need to contact the creator of the zip file, if possible, and ask him to create another zip file. The third scenario can be addressed by installing an antivirus and/or anti-spyware program on your computer and using it to scan and repair the zip file causing the Error 110 condition.
