The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Code of Conduct defines the professional standards and expectations of registered occupational therapists, certified occupational therapy assistants and candidates for registration or certification.
The Code of Conduct requires all NBCOT certificants to adhere to the highest standards of personal and professional conduct. They are required to take responsibility for their actions, continually improve skills and knowledge in their profession and conduct their practice with honesty, integrity, fairness and regard for the well-being of their clients and colleagues.
Honesty and Integrity
NBCOT candidates will communicate truthfully and completely with regard to their education, certification, work and research. They are also required to cooperate with the NBCOT during the certification process and investigations.
Certificants are required to comply with federal, state and local laws concerning the practice of occupational therapy. They will not have been convicted of a crime that relates to the occupational therapy profession or that which indicates an inability to competently practice occupational therapy.
Candidates will not participate in any activity or behaviour that causes the perception of a threat or potential threat to their clients or the profession. They will not provide services while impaired by legal or illegal chemical substances, including alcohol and prescription medications.
Certificants will refrain from engaging in activities that violate appropriate professional boundaries with clients, colleagues and field students. These activities include professional sexual misconduct, sexual and financial exploitation, inappropriate contact and personal intrusion.
