Birthday breakfast ideas

When celebrating a loved one's birthday, start the day off right with a special breakfast. Don't worry about creating an extravagant meal as many common breakfast dishes can easily be spruced up with a few decorative touches.

Make a simple stack of pancakes exciting with the addition of a sparkler candle. These candles are similar to the handheld sparkler fireworks commonly used on the Fourth of July and can be purchased from cake decorating stores. While the candles are meant to be placed on a cake or cupcakes, you can insert the candle into a stack of pancakes, just make sure that at least 1 inch of the candle is inserted into the pancakes so that it is firmly held in place to prevent the lit candle from falling out and creating a fire hazard. This idea is best for adults and children should never be left unsupervised with a lit sparkler.

Breakfast Message

Use alphabet cookie cutters to cut a message such as "Happy Birthday" into toasted bread or cooked pancakes. If you are using toast, arrange the message around cooked eggs. A pancake message pairs well with a small cup of maple syrup for dipping and sausage links or cooked bacon.

Cinnamon Bun Cake

Transform monkey bread into a cinnamon-bun flavoured breakfast cake with the addition of store-bought frosting. Frozen monkey bread can be purchased from many grocery stores ready to heat in your oven or microwave. If you are making your own, start with a tube of biscuit dough. Cut each of the six biscuits into four pieces and dredge the biscuit pieces in 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar. Place the biscuits in a greased bundt pan and bake in a 400 degree oven for approximately 10 minutes. Once the monkey bread has finished baking, heat a container of white frosting in the microwave in 30 second increments until the frosting is melted and thin enough to pour. Pour the melted frosting over the monkey bread and add a few candles before serving.

Breakfast in Bed

Nearly any breakfast becomes special when it is served in bed. Use a sturdy tray to avoid spills and make sure that you include all of the utensils needed to eat the meal. Add napkins and be sure to provide creamer and sugar for coffee if necessary. A birthday card or small wrapped gift on the tray is a nice touch as is singing happy birthday when you enter the room to present the breakfast.
