How to Make Pictures Unpixelated

Updated March 23, 2017

A pixelated effect makes up the colours in a background. In computer graphics, pixelated effects can be seen in video games such as Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. It may also be seen in regular photos, giving the picture more flair. However, if you have a digital image or picture that has excessive pixelation, Photoshop has advanced tools to manipulate a photo and smooth out the appearance.

  1. Launch Photoshop. Scroll to "File" and then "Open." Open the image file with the pixelation. Double-click the image background under the "Layers" tab to turn the image into a layer.

  2. Scroll to the toolbar on the left side of your screen and click the "Blur" tool. The "Blur" tool looks like a drop of water. Scroll to the top of your screen to the panel underneath the "Menu" bar. Click the second icon to the left to set the brush shape and size appropriate for your picture.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the toolbar to see two boxes overlapping each other. Double-click the first box to open the dialogue box for the "Foreground." Use the "Eyedropper" tool to select the colour on the image that you wish to apply a blur and click OK."

  4. Reselect the "Blur" tool and apply it to the edges where the pixelation is the most obvious. Scroll to "Filter," "Blur" and click "Gaussian Blur" to create a softening effect to the image to even out the effect.
