How to Clean Gunmetal

Proper care of firearms includes tending to the metal portions of a weapon. This metal is sometimes referred to as gunmetal. When cleaning gunmetal, take care not to scratch or mar the surface. Accomplish this by using soft chamois cloths and specialised gun oil as solvent. Solvents help break down rust, while the oil helps prevent rust after cleaning. When handling firearms, treat them as if they are loaded at all times.

Open the firearm chamber or barrel and ensure that the weapon is unloaded. If the firearm has a safety, turn it on.

Spray solvent onto the gun metal and use a dry chamois cloth to work it into the metal. Scrub any rust spots with the chamois cloth and a little extra solvent until the rust is dissolved and wiped off the gunmetal.

Wipe away excess solvent and let the gunmetal dry. Brush the gunmetal with a horsehair brush to remove any dust.

Water pistol oil on a fresh chamois cloth and wipe down the gunmetal, leaving a light coat of gun oil on the metal. The oil acts as a barrier to rust.
