How to clean carpet with baking soda & vinegar

Updated February 21, 2017

Carpeting is a warm, cosy flooring option used throughout many homes. It can come in a variety of lengths, but since carpeting is made of fibres, dirt and soil collect and absorb into the carpet constantly. There are a few carpet powders and sprays that deodorise carpeting, but you often need a cleaning and disinfecting solution. Instead of paying high prices for retail products, clean your carpet with baking soda and vinegar.

  1. Fill a spray bottle with an equal mix of warm water and white vinegar.

  2. Spray the solution over your carpeting, and allow to air dry. The vinegar is a natural disinfectant that will kill bacteria and odour.

  3. Cover your carpeting with a light coating of baking soda after the vinegar solution dries, and let sit for 30 minutes. The baking soda is a natural cleaning and deodorising element and also absorbs moisture in the carpet fibres.

  4. Vacuum your carpet after 30 minutes to collect the baking soda as well as any loose dirt.
