The best over the counter acne treatments

Written by kelly sundstrom

Acne is a common condition that causes the skin to erupt in whiteheads, cysts and nodules. These inflamed and irritated spots can be painful and difficult to get rid of if the skin is not treated properly. Luckily, a simple strategy uses over-the-counter remedies in a specific way to clear the skin quickly and effectively.

Cleanser for Sensitive Skin

Most soaps found in grocery or chemist contain harsh chemicals that can be extremely drying or irritating to the skin. Since acne-prone skin is already inflamed and irritated, it is important to use a soap that is designed for sensitive skin types. Soaps for sensitive skin will not contain strong chemical ingredients or artificial perfumes. Instead, these soaps will clean the skin gently without causing skin damage. Is it also important to avoid scrubbing the skin too aggressively. All that is needed when washing the face is to lather gently and to rinse the skin with water.

Benzoyl Peroxide Cream

Medicating the skin with a benzoyl peroxide cream will allow the skin to clear very quickly, but most people tend to overmedicate the skin with benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide creams come in many concentrations, so when someone suffers from acne breakouts, he has a tendency to use the highest strength cream on the market. This can actually burn the skin and can lead to severe dryness, irritation, peeling and redness on the skin. Only use the lowest benzoyl peroxide cream available, no higher than a 2.5 per cent concentration cream. Use a nickel-sized amount, and spread the cream onto the skin as gently as possible. Do not rub the cream into the skin, simply glide the fingers across the skin until the cream is absorbed.

Oil-Free Facial Moisturizer

Any time a medicated acne cream like benzoyl peroxide is used on the skin, it is important to follow it with an oil-free moisturising lotion. Without a lotion, the skin can still become too dry, even when using the lowest strength benzoyl peroxide cream. Using an oil-free lotion will allow the skin to be both clear and hydrated. It is important to select a lotion that is oil-free so that it does not contain oils that could clog the pores, resulting in more acne. Smooth a dime-sized amount of an oil-free moisturising lotion onto the skin as gently as possible until it has been absorbed.
