A fairy tale party is a royal blast for kids of all ages. Invite kings, queens, dragons and knights to a party that will make guests feel like they stepped into the pages of their favourite fairy tale. Have guests dress as a prince, wizard or queen to attend the fairy tale party.

Create storybook invitations. Staple several pieces of card stock or stationery together to form a small book. Print storybook characters off of the Internet and tape them to the pages. The invitation details can be included in the book. Word the invitations with statements like "Join us for a fairy tale party celebrating the birth of Princess Elizabeth," or "Come mingle with dragons to celebrate King Kevin's birthday." Request that guests dress up as their favourite fairy tale character.

Make a castle cake by starting with a regular square birthday cake. Use candy and other foods to decorate the castle. Stack giant marshmallows on top of each other to make pillars, use graham crackers for walls, and candy to decorate the castle. Cookies are also an option for decorating your castle. Serve finger foods such as small peanut butter and jelly or turkey sandwiches, crackers and cut up fruit.

Create a castle for the guests to play in using a large refrigerator or other appliance box. Paint, colour or tape on construction paper decorations for the castle. Other decorations can include balloons, streamers, royal pennants and a special throne for the birthday child. Hang pictures of castles and any fairy tale characters or medieval themed things like swords, dragons, knights and carriages.

Games and Activities

Buy crown making materials at a craft store and let guests decorate paper or foam crowns with stick on rhinestones, crayons, stickers and markers. Girls can decorate tiaras and boys can make crowns or swords. Play fairy tale movies and read fairy tales from storybooks. Let the kids act out the characters or scenes from the movies or books. As kids arrive for the party, tape a picture of a fairy tale character on their back. Throughout the party they must ask the other guests questions to try and guess which character they are.
