Recipe for Homemade Paint Remover

Updated February 21, 2017

Removing old paint from household items and other materials can be done without commercial products. A homemade paint remover can be made with a few cleaning items and it can be a money saver.

Removing Paint from Clothing

A homemade paint remover recipe may be needed if you have paint stains on clothes. Treat clothing by applying rubbing alcohol on the paint stains and rub in a circular motion with a toothbrush. Pre-treat the same area with washing powder, for maximum stain fighting power, before placing the item into the washing machine.

Borax and Ammonia

Mix two cups of room-temperature water with 1 cup borax, 1 cup household ammonia and 1 cup washing soda. All of these items can be purchased in the washing powder aisle. Form a paste with this homemade paint remover recipe and apply it to the area with paint stains. Allow mixture to penetrate for up to 20 minutes and rinse it off with water while brushing with steel wool.

Washing Soda

Washing soda is sold in the washing powder aisles but is not the same as baking soda. Mix 1 cup cold water with four spoonfuls of washing soda in a bowl. Add spoonfuls of flour until the mixture is a thick cream. Apply this paint remover recipe to the stained area and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Scrape the paint remover solution off with a firm brush while rinsing under a stream of water.
